Kommos is a long, sandy beach located just behind Matala’s famous caves, near the villages of Pitsidia and Kalamaki in southern Crete. With its turquoise waters and relaxed atmosphere, it’s a perfect spot to get away from the busier tourist hubs.
What to Do
- 🏊♂️ Swimming and Sunbathing: The large, sandy beach provides plenty of space to spread out. The sea is clean and calm, though strong winds can kick up large waves. Be cautious of steep drop-offs.
- 👙 Naturism: A popular nude bathing area is located in the middle section of the beach. It offers a bit more privacy under trees.
- 🐢 Wildlife: Endangered sea turtles nest along Kommos in designated conservation areas. Don’t disturb marked nest sites.
- 🚶♀️Scenic Walks: Trails from the beach lead to ancient Minoan ruins and clifftop lookouts with gorgeous Libyan Sea views.
Where to Eat
The remote beach has limited dining options, but a few good tavernas are located nearby:
Láions
Perched on the cliffs above, this family-run taverna serves high-quality local cuisine and incredible views of Matala’s caves and the sea for reasonable prices. Don’t miss the fresh grilled fish!
