Agiofaraggo Beach is a hidden paradise located in a gorge in southern Crete, Greece. To reach this secluded beach, you must either hike through the Agiofaraggo gorge for about 30 minutes or arrive by boat from nearby towns. The effort to get here is well worth it – you’ll be rewarded with a peaceful beach and some of the clearest water in Crete!
What to Do
- 🏞️ Admire the natural beauty: The beach is surrounded by towering rock formations and caves carved into the cliffs. It feels untouched.
- 🏊♂️ Swim and snorkel: The calm, clear waters are perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Spot sea life among the rocks!
- 🥾 Hike through the gorge: The hike to the beach is easy, shaded, and picturesque as you walk along the canyon bottom.
- 🛶 Arrive by boat: You can also reach the beach by boat from the towns of Matala, Agia Galini, or Kokkinos Pirgos.
- 🏕️ Go camping: The beach is a favorite spot for camping under the stars. Just be sure to respect the environment!
Where to Eat
Small taverns with simple Greek food can be found at the entrance of the gorge. But most people bring their own snacks and water – there are no facilities at the beach itself.
Kafenio “Karavovrisi”
A popular tavern along the road to the gorge. Known for its friendly owner, generous hospitality, delicious grilled fish, and traditional Greek meat dishes. Cash only.
Where to Stay
There are no hotels immediately near the beach. Visitors stay at accommodations in Kokkinos Pirgos or Matala and drive or hike in for the day.
Antonios Hotel Apartments in Matala offers spacious, modern rooms only a 3 minute walk from the town’s famous Red Beach and cafes. Free parking and WiFi.
Elea Terra Hotel has a lovely pool and bar area. It’s located a 7-10 minute walk from Matala Beach. Family-run with friendly staff. Offers half-board meal plans.
Parking
Parking is available at the entrance of the Agiofaraggo gorge. From there, it’s a 20-25 minute walk on a shaded, easy trail to the beach. The gravel access road is bumpy but doable in a regular car if you drive slowly.
