Gramvousa Beach is a small yet stunning beach on the northwest coast of Crete, known for its exotic landscape, turquoise waters and pirate lore.
📋 What to Do
- Swim in crystal clear waters: The beach has beautifully clear blue and green waters perfect for swimming and snorkeling. But beware – there are sharp rocks and stones under the water. Bring water shoes!
- Sunbathe on the beach: The beach itself is small with beige sand. It can get very crowded when big cruise ships arrive. Go early to enjoy more space.
- Hike up to the fortress: A moderate 30 minute hike up to the Venetian fortress from the 16th century rewards with absolutely gorgeous panoramic views. Wear proper shoes for the rocky terrain.
- Spot goats and wildlife: Keep an eye out for local wildlife like goats and birds that call Gramvousa Island their home.
- Visit the beach tavern: Enjoy a meal or drink at the small beach tavern located right on the sand.
🍽 Where to Eat
There are no restaurants or cafes near the beach itself besides the small beach tavern. Visitors should plan to either eat there or bring your own snacks and drinks for the day.
🏨 Where to Stay
There are a few good hotels on the mainland near Kissamos port where boats to Gramvousa Island depart from, including:
- Balos Beach Hotel – Very friendly, amazing views and delicious food. Well located near the port.
- Hotel Aqua Marine – Charming, quiet hotel with exceptional hospitality and tasty homemade breakfast.
- Golden Sun Hotel – Clean, modern rooms and kind owners. Short 5 minute walk to the beach.
🅿 Parking
There is a dirt parking area near the trailhead leading down to the beach. The 8km drive from the main road is very rough with loose rocks so drive slowly. Parking costs around 3€ for the entire day. Arrive early to secure a space during high season.
